exploring aruba water sports

On The Water

Things to Do . . . With Wet Feet:

Scuba diving

Aruba has some of the best diving in the world. Average water temperatures of 80°F (27°C) and excellent visibility (of 18 - 36m / 59 - 118ft) allow for a great dive. Enjoy a healthy variety and population of coral, including body boarding arubafinger, star, brain and sheet. Home to numerous plane and ship wrecks, including the largest shipwreck in all of the Caribbean, providing interesting dive sites. Expect to see the common snappers, damselfish, parrotfish and angel fish. Also you can expect to see eels, seahorses, frogfish and black crinoids.

Snorkeling

Clear water and a number of shallow reefs make Aruba great for viewing the underwater world from the surface. Always keep to the leeward, southern coast - rough water and dangerous currents stretch the length of the north coast. North of the Palm beach area, you'll find Catalina Bay and Arashi Reef - featuring brain and star coral, parrotfish and angelfish - maybe you'll even see an octopus.

Snuba

A nice compromise between scuba diving and snorkeling, snuba allows you to breathe while walking on the ocean floor - up to 20 ft (6.1m) down. Your regulator is connected to a tank of compressed air on the surface. A great opportunity to experience the sea without all the training (and gear) required for scuba diving.

Sailing

Numerous options exist for sailing adventures. Choose from water sports, or dinner and a sunset. The calm southern coast make for a relaxing trip - great for the kids. Some ships allow you to dance the night way on the ocean, and even take a midnight swim in the warm waters.

Parasailing

Imagine viewing Aruba from the air, almost 600ft up! Visit Palm Beach to add parasailing to your list of amazing experiences. Take along a waterproof camera to take some once-in-a-lifetime photos.

Kayaking, Jet Skiing & Windsurfing

For a peaceful paddle through a coastal mangrove forest, visit Savaneta. The calm waters are great for these hands-on water sports. Palm beach is the place to go for jet-skis. Malmok Beach (Fisherman's Huts) or Rodgers Beach are great places to try windsurfing or kite surfing. Winds average 20-25 knots in May through July.

Deep-sea fishing

Try fishing just off the coast, and expect to catch red snapper or dolphin fish (to be clear, these are not dolphin the mammal, they just share the same name) with a hand line. try deep sea fishing on a charted boat and expect to catch barracuda, amberjack, wahoo, marlin (blue or white), or even yellow or black-fin tuna. Some restaurants in the city will even cook and serve your catch for you.
