Take a Side Trip to Curaçao
Arrival and Getting Around
The majority of visitors to Curaçao arrive via Hato Int'l Airport, 12km northwest of Willemstad, the capital. Outside of the terminal, you'll find numerous car rentals agencies, taxis and buses awaiting passengers. A taxi downtown will cost approx US$8-10. Many hotels provide shuttle service to/from the airport. A ferry service runs twice daily to Bonaire (1hr 30 min each way). For a great map of Curacao, visit the bottom of this page.
Willemstad - Curaçao's Capital City
The lively city of Willemstad is full of colorful Dutch colonial architecture. Offering visitors an abundance of shopping and cultural attractions, Willemstad is much more than just great beaches. Downtown Willemstad is divided by Santa Ana Bay - Punda on the east and Otrobanda to the west. Both sides are great for walking, and for getting lost in. The famous Queen Emma Pontoon Bridge - a swinging pedestrian bridge that opens for passing cruise ships and boats. Designed in 1888, the bridge used to charge 2¢ per person - for those wearing shoes, and free for those barefoot. Today, its free for all - shoes or not.
Christoffel National Park
Located in the northwest section of the island, is the beautiful Christoffel National Park. This 4600-acre preserve protects an array of plants and animals and is located just 45 min from the capital. The highest point on the island, Mount Christoffel (375m) is the center piece of the park. From the main park gates, you can choose from 8 different walking trails, which vary in skill and length. The most rewarding is the hike directly up Mount Christoffel, which gives amazing views of the whole island. Trail maps and the guide book, both available at the main entrance, are highly recommended.
